European University Institute - Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies Sanctions coalitions: stronger together | Sonali Chowdhry Max Weber Fellow Sonali Chowdhry has co-authored an op-ed for the Centre for Economic Policy Research on the effectiveness of coordinating sanctions. 15 November 2022 | Opinion Print Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Send by email This piece, published on 30 October 2022, examines the impact of coordinated coalitions on the economic cost and deterrent power of sanctions, focusing on the 2012 Iran and 2014 Russia sanctions. By applying the structural gravity model, authors show that these coalitions serve a dual purpose – they reduce the average domestic welfare losses borne by coalition members while deepening welfare losses for the sanctioned state.
