International Women's Day (IWD) is a day commemorated worldwide to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also an occasion to bring attention to women’s rights issues and the struggle for gender equality.

The EUI community has come together across different services and department to collectively join the celebration of 8 March 2022 through a number of activities, events and initiatives that will take place not only on IWD but also throughout the rest of the month of March, broadly indicated as Women’s History Month.

During the month, the Library’s social media accounts are highlighting some of the former female professors at the EUI that have left a mark in their field and in the history of women in academia. The Historical Archives of the European Union are also placing the spotlight on the legacy and work of relevant female personalities who made their mark on the European Union, including former President of the European Parliament, Simone Veil.

The dedicated playlist ‘Women in research’ curated by the Robert Schuman Centre includes video content related to women who are currently carrying out or have been involved in remarkable work at the RSC. Two of them include Max Weber Fellows at the RSC, Martina Ferracane, who has been featured as one of the top 100 women in social enterprise by the Euclid network, and Farah Ramzy, who explains in a new Schuman Short the political expression 'contentious politics' in all its forms.

At the School of Transnational Governance, former Africa Fellow, Tumaini Malenga shares her testimony on deciding to participate in the STG Young African Leaders Programme while pregnant. Furthermore, Research Fellow Costanza Hermanin and Project Associate Carlotta Osti propose some further actions the EU could take to give even more clout to gender equality measures in the EUIdeas blogpost, Gender equality and EU politics: Hold the money!. Recently, Hermanin also organised a Policy Dialogue in which experts and politicians discussed how to enhance gender equality in politics and shared feedback on the EUI’s ‘IncluLeader - Inclusive Leadership for Sustainable Governance’ research project.

Moreover, members of the ERC-funded research programme, ECOINT, directed by History Professor Glenda Sluga, have published an article underlining the importance of women’s intellectual contribution to international economic thinking.

EUI Researchers, staff and faculty are also getting involved on the Institute's radio channel, Radio Cavolo for a special line-up on 8 March dedicated to IWD.

Finally, across different services and academic units, the EUI is involved in the organisation of events that will touch on important themes related to IWD, such as the conference Man, I feel like a woman: updating academia for women scholars, which addresses the challenges faced by women in research and academic environments, and the lecture Women and Men: Equal Career Opportunities? Equal Caregiving Responsibilities!, hosting a presentation by New America CEO, Professor Anne-Marie Slaughter.
