Building on the successful joint initiative of the 2023 Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility (ICM) programme – fostering the international mobility of faculty, students, researchers, and staff – and the EUI Widening Europe Programme, the agreement between the EUI and the University of Tirana will enhance collaboration in the fields of higher education and research.

The five-year agreement will allow for the cooperation between the two Parties to extend beyond mobility, envisioning teaching opportunities for EUI doctoral candidates, as well as the organisation of trainings, workshops, conferences and events, and the participation of the University of Tirana in the EUI Widening Europe Programme. The Programme, launched by the EUI in November 2023, aims at closing the knowledge gap across Europe and strengthening internationalisation, competitiveness, and quality in Widening countries.

Together, the two institutions will facilitate intellectual collaboration and international understanding through the establishment of joint activities, including the promotion of sabbaticals, visiting professorships and fellowships, and staff visits, as well as the creation of an exchange programme for researchers at the doctoral and post-doctoral levels.

This partnership plays an important role in creating an enabling academic environment, providing in-depth understanding of the European Union's enlargement process and a critical outlook on the significant opportunities and challenges of the 21st century, particularly focusing on Southeastern Europe and EU-Western Balkans relations, and targeting specifically the next generation of researchers and policymakers.

The University of Tirana (UT) is a higher education institution established in 1957 by the Presidium of the Popular Assembly of the Republic of Albania to operate in the fields of higher education. The University is composed of six faculties, two institutes, and offers 161 programmes: 37 Bachelor of Arts programmes; 1 Integrated Study Programme; 73 Master of Science; 41 Professional Master's; 2 Executive Master Programmes; and 7 PhD programmes.

Any further information on this partnership may be obtained from the EUI External Relations Office.
