On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association of the European University Institute (EUI) would like to reiterate its full support to the continuation and the strengthening of the European integration process. Our Association brings together leading scholars in various disciplines of European studies, and its members are behind a myriad of extensive scientific works on all aspects of the European Union. These publications and the research they reflect are a testament to the crucial role played by cooperation and solidarity when addressing national and ‘EU-ropean’ problems. The EU institutional framework remains fundamental for granting peace, stability and growth in the continent.
In recent times, the remarkable achievements of six decades of integration have been rattled by the rise of populism and Euroscepticism in a ‘post-truth’ world displaying signs of disdain towards expert opinions. Such views could seriously jeopardize the future of the EU. This Executive Committee believes that the celebrations of 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome offer a perfect opportunity to acknowledge the benefits of European integration, without forgetting the harm that exacerbated nationalism can inflict on the European project and its people. It is also a time to celebrate the creation and enhancement of knowledge in EU-related issues by all scholars, and by EUI alumni in particular. Their outstanding work will, without a doubt, continue to play a significant role in the process of creating an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe.
On 25th March 2017, EUI Alumni Association members will be taking part in the March for Europe organised in Rome in support of a strong, united and democratic EU (
