The Historical Archives of the European Union pays tribute to former Member of European Parliament Carlo Casini, who passed away on 23 March 2020 at the age of 85 years.
Carlo Casini served as an Italian Member of the European Parliament from 1984 to 1999 and from 2006 to 2014. Within the Parliament, he was Member of the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian-Democratic Group). During his legislative terms, he was Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Citizens’ Rights and of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs.
He played a key role in updating the Archives Regulation 354/83 leading to the amended version 2015/496, which made the archival deposit in Florence mandatory for all EU institutions, bodies and agencies with the exception of the Court of Justice and the European Central Bank that may deposit on a voluntary basis. With the amended regulation Carlo Casini also contributed to providing a stable budget for the HAEU through a cost-sharing approach amongst the depositing EU institutions.
Carlo Casini has always given generous support to the activities of the European University Institute and showed great dedication to younger generations through his participation in the educational programme of the HAEU.
The HAEU staff expresses deepest condolences to Carlo Casini’s family and friends.
