Academic Writing Skills Workshops

Academic writing is a constant part of the academic's life. Sometimes it can be helpful to single out and focus on just one aspect of writing for an hour or two. The English Unit can organise workshops or short courses on specific areas of academic writing on request.

The minimum number of participants for a workshop to go ahead is eight.  If you are interested contact the CALL Assistant, providing your name, department, and cohort. If you already have a group of interested people, include your colleagues' information as well.  

The choice of materials is tailored as much as possible to the participants. If the group consists of just one discipline then the workshop will focus on discipline-specific materials. If the group is interdisciplinary, then the materials will be correspondingly interdisciplinary. 

Below is a list of workshops that have been offered in the past. These are not exhaustive, and we can add any others you think could be included. You can contact the CALL Assistant with specific suggestions for other related areas.

• Writing clear sentences
• Flow in text, or how to move from sentence to sentence clearly and logically
• Flow between paragraphs, or how to create paragraphs that carry your argument forward effectively
• Reviewing the literature, or how to structure the LR section and incorporate it into your paper
• Polishing your paper: editing and proofreading
• Abstracts
• Writing up your data, or data commentary
• Coming up with creative, meaningful and attractive Research Paper titles
• Bookends: introductions and conclusions
• Punctuating your paper, or yet another way of adding nuance and meaning
