Other (non-EUI) Funding Opportunities for Open Access Publishing
This is a non-comprehensive list of alternative funding options for open access articles with various publishers.
Research4Life
The programme offers and urges for academic collaboration between authors from Europe and beyond, and the dissemination of joint work in Open Access. Authors from low- and middle-income countries who are not covered by an institutional open access agreement can obtain full waiver or discounted APC.

Cambridge Open Equity Initiative (COEI): The COEI funds Gold Open Access publishing for authors from over 100 low- and middle-income countries, covering over 5,000 institutions.

This eligibility is automatically recognised by any journal that publishes Gold OA articles. See our COEI hub for information on qualifying countries and frequently asked questions.

Corresponding authors of research articles based in Research4Life 'Group A’ countries will automatically have the APC waived 100%, and authors based in ‘Group B’ countries will receive a 50% discount on an article’s APC.

Discretionary waivers and discounts: Any corresponding author of a research article who does not have coverage through an open access agreement, an equity initiative, or outside funding to pay an article processing charge (APC), can make a request for a discount or full waiver of an APC.

Research4Life: 100% or 50% APC waivers. All authors who are eligible for a Research4Life APC waiver or 50% discount will automatically see information after acceptance of their article in the rights and access forms, informing them about the APC waiver or discount depending on their eligibility criteria opens in new tab/window.

If an author group from a non-Research4life country cannot afford the APC to publish an article in a gold open access journal, and they can demonstrate they have had no research funding, we will consider individual waiver requests on a case-by-case basis.

Supports authors through Research4Life and Publication Fee Assistance programs.

Publication in any PLOS journal is free for authors whose research is funded primarily (50% or more of the work contained within the article) by an institution located in a Research4Life Group A country.

Authors whose research funder is based in a Research4Life Group B country also publish for free in PLOS Biology, PLOS Climate, PLOS Global Public Health, PLOS Medicine, PLOS Mental Health, PLOS Sustainability and Transformation and PLOS Water.

For all other journals, the publication fee will be reduced to $800.

APC discount or waiver

Corresponding authors with primary affiliation in countries that are defined by the World Bank as low-income economies and which also have a gross domestic product (GDP) of less than 100 billion US dollars, are entitled to 100% APC waiver when they publish in a full open access journal.

EIFL network countries: Corresponding authors with primary affiliations based in one of the 34 EIFL network countries may be eligible for a 100% or 50% discount on the normal APC in a selection of our full open access journals.
