► DATA DISCOVERY AND THE LIBRARY DATA PORTAL

The Library Data Portal provides access to licensed resources for EUI members and introduces open data resources of relevance to EUI research themes. All 78 resources have an online resource guide. The Data Portal has four sub-directories:

► DATA PROTECTION, DATABASE COPYRIGHT AND ETHICS COMMITTEE REVIEW

The EUI Guide to Good Data Protection Practice in Research provides details of data protection at the EUI. The collection and processing of personal data for research purposes may require EUI scholars to apply for Ethics Committee review before data collection and processing can begin. EUI members can initiate the review via the link 'Procedure to request an Ethics Review' (intranet login required). The Ethics Committee review must be completed before data collection begins, as approval cannot be granted retroactively.

  • The Library provides a Secure Data Room for EUI scholars using data from providers who explicitly require that data be accessed in a secure space. The room, BF-169, is located on the upper floor of the Library. New users should write to [email protected] to register for access. Data users should also read the Library's Terms and Conditions of access to, and use of, licensed electronic resources.

DATA MANAGEMENT PLANS (DMPs)

Data management plans are documents normally required by research funders at the beginning, mid-point and conclusion of research projects. EUI members who are required to submit a data management plan should contact the Library for assistance. The following resources are provided by the EUI Library, the Data Protection Office and the Academic Service:

RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT IN HORIZON EUROPE, ERC AND OTHER EU PROGRAMMES

EUI project managers and principal investigators who are preparing EU Horizon Europe and European Research Council (ERC) grant proposals are required to submit preliminary information about data management provisions in the proposed project. The Horizon Europe Programme Guide and the ERC Work Programme provide guidance for Principal Investigators and details of data management obligations for project managers.

MANAGING DATA DURING THE RESEARCH PROJECT CYCLE

Data should be carefully managed throughout the research project. Particular attention should be given to data input, quality control, dataset design, security and backup, folder structure, file structure, file naming, variable naming, software format, documentation and codebooks, data protection, informed consent of data subjects, anonymisation and pseudonymisation, copyright, preservation, archiving, data citation and – where possible – data sharing. Full details are on the Data Services homepage.

REPOSITING AND PRESERVING EUI RESEARCH DATA IN THE RESEARCH REPOSITORY, CADMUS

EUI research data outputs can be reposited in the Research Data Collection of the EUI research repository Cadmus. The repository is an infrastructure for data preservation and sharing, and a solution for funder-mandated research data management compliance (eg. the EU Horizon Europe and European Research Council programmes). Contact the Library for advice when preparing research datasets for submission to the Cadmus repository. The Library can also provide advice on dataset structure, folders and versioning; metadata; anonymisation and pseudonymisation.

ICT INFRASTRUCTURE, SOFTWARE AND SUPPORT

The EUI ICT Service provides infrastructure, software and connectivity support. Research software programmes are listed on the ICT web site. Technical support is provided at the site offices of the ICT Service. The ICT Service supports a wide range of software including Fortran, Gauss, MATLAB, OxMetrics, Python, R, Stata, Stat/Transfer, WinEdt, WinRATS - and supports the high-performance computing cluster. A guide to the High Performance Cluster (HPC) is available by writing to [email protected] (EUI members only). Over 2,500 software manuals are available at the EUI Library.
