Book club

Our Book Club is a safe space where those who love reading can gather and discuss books, short stories, poems, and more.  The group is free and welcomes everyone who wishes to discuss their favourite reads or get recommendations from others. We usually meet up and discuss a chosen book that we have been reading. Members can choose from a variety of fiction and non-fiction titles. Alongside book discussions, we also hold socials for the community to bond and share our love of books and reading.

All books selected by members are purchased by the Library in advance. Members are welcome to attend one, some or all sessions.

Books read in previous sessions:

Gerard Reve, The Evenings (1947).

Simone de Beauvoir, The Mandarins (1954).

Alaa Al Aswany, The Yacoubian Building (2002).

Natalia Ginzburg, Family Lexicon (1967).

Marlen Haushofer, The Wall (1963).

Anne Garréta, Sphinx (1986).

Haruki Murakami, 19Q4 (2009-10).

Louise Glück, Averno (2006).

Gretchen Felker-Martin, Manhunt (2022).

Upcoming:

Herta Müller, The Fox Was Ever The Hunter (1992).

Han Kang, Human Acts (2014).

Ghassan Kanafani, Returning to Haifa (1969).

Jenny Erpenbeck, Kairos (2021).

Date and time

The Bookclub meets roughly once every two months, depending on the length of the book, in the evening. You can join one, some or all sessions.

Where

We either meet in person (eg, in the Caffè Letterario, Le Murate) or online.

Information

The Bookclub generally meets once every 2 months in the afternoons or evenings to read books selected by you. We either meet in person or online, depending on those who are available for the session (you are not required to attend all sessions but you are of course welcome to). We have previously met in the Conventino and in Le Murate. If you have any suggestions for places to meet don’t hesitate to make them in the group chat.

All books selected by the Bookclub are ordered by the Library so that you can have a physical copy of them at your disposal if you’re in Florence. If you would like to make suggestions for this year, please make them on this Google doc and notify us in the group chat so we’re aware of them.

Our next session will probably take place in early November (date to be confirmed soon) and it will be on Herta Müller’s The Fox Was Ever the Hunter. The book is yet to arrive at the Library. We’ll let you know when it’s available.

Before that session, we’ll organise a gathering in order to meet you all. Information will be shared soon!

Everyone is welcome to attend. If you have a friend in Florence who is interested to join a session, please bring them with you!

If you’d like to take an active part in the organisation of the Bookclub, please write to us.
