Getting Connected

On campus, both wired (LAN) and wireless (WiFi) network access is offered to all EUI members and registered guests whereas eduroam members can make use of eduroam's wireless network access.

Off campus, members can use VPN to access EUI's network resources (intranet) via third party provider.

The ICT directly manages both wired and wireless access at the Faentina flats as well wireless access at the Pian di Mugnone flats via external company Wi4Net.

This page summarizes all information needed to get connected at the EUI [1]:

Network Connection Configuration

Either wired or wireless, preliminary network configuration is needed on non-EUI computers (e.g. personal laptops) in order to properly access EUI's network resources. The below configuration instructions shold be followed by all EUI members:

Wired Network Connection (LAN)

Pre-requistes

  • You must be an EUI member with or a registered guest with valid Computing Account;
  • Your device must have a properly installed 10BaseT, 100BaseT or 1000Base/T compliant network card (NIC). Advice on installing and setting up your network card can be provided by Portable Device Support;
  • You must provide yourself with a Cat6 UTP compliant network cable (at least 1m long) with standard RJ45 connector/plug. Compatible network cables can be found in any electronic shop.
  • You must configure Network Connection on your device as per above instructions.

Where to Find Wired Access Areas

Most Computer Rooms and Offices have spare network sockets available. These are usually marked with a small computer icon and a letter B (A and C sockets tipically being reserved for in-house equipment like computers and telephones).

Please Note: not all network sockets are active: please inquire with the EUI Helpdesk in case of need.

Wireless Network Connection (WiFi)

  • For EUI-WiFi and eduroam, your device and/or wireless must support as well 802.1x authentication with 40- or 128 WPA2/AES encryption;
  • For EUI-WiFi, you must configure Network Connection on your device as per above instructions;
  • For OS specific pre-requisites, please check the relavant configuration documentation for EUI-WiFi, EUI-Guest and/or eduroam network.

Where to Find Wireless Access Areas

Wireless access areas can be found in several places around the Campus. For a detailed list, please click here.

Please note: all wireless access areas host EUI-WiFi, EUI-Guest and eduroam networks contemporarily.

Access for EUI Members (via EUI-WiFi)

Wireless network connection for EUI members is available via EUI-WiFi network.

Detailed information and configuration instructions can be found here.

Access for EUI Guests (via EUI-Guest)

Wireless network connection for registered EUI guests is available via EUI-Guest network.

Detailed information and configuration instructions can be found here whereas protocols and services available to EUI guests via EUI-Guest are listed here.

eduroam

Members of an eduroam institution can make use of the wireless eduroam Network connection using their home institution credentials.

Detailed information and configuration instructions can be found here whereas protocols and services via available to eduroam members are listed here.

Please note that visitors to the EUI using eduroam are not entitled to access the EUI Library’s licensed e-resources.

Access at the EUI Flats

Access at the Ponte alla Badia (PAB) and Pian di Mugnone (PDM) EUI Flats is detailed here.

VPN Remote Connection

Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows you to make a secure remote connection to EUI's network, that is internal servers/resources, overriding the normal security restrictions (set up for non-EUI members) by authenticating you as an EUI user.

VPN is available for:

  • GNU/Linux (Ubuntu)
  • iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch)
  • mac OS X
  • Windows 10

For further info, please visit VPN's page.
